What is a cookie?

An HTTP cookie (also called web cookie, Internet cookie, browser cookie, or simply cookie) is a small piece of data stored on a person’s computer or device. Cookies perform essential functions in the modern web.

What are cookies used for?

Session cookies are temporary cookies that remember your online activities. For example, they are a mechanism for websites to remember information about a person or to record the person’s browsing activity (including clicking particular buttons or recording which pages were visited in the past). A good example of how session cookies are helpful is online shopping. When you’re shopping online, you can check-out at any time. That’s because session cookies track your movement, so the website knows it is still you each time you navigate to a new page on the store’s website. Without the session cookie, your cart would be empty when you tried to check-out.

Persistent cookies (also known as first-party cookies) work by tracking your online preferences. Persistent cookies are the most common method used by web servers to authenticate a person, to know whether they are logged in or not, and which account they are logged in with. Without such a mechanism, the site would not know whether to send a page containing sensitive information or require the user to authenticate themselves by logging in. Persistent cookies also help computers to remember preferences like your language selection, saved content, and more.

Tracking cookies, and especially third-party tracking cookies, are commonly used as ways to create long-term records of a person’s browsing histories, show targeted advertisements to them across the Internet, and track behavior, such as whether an email has been received and opened.

How do we use cookies?

We use cookies, web beacons, and other automated tracking methods on our Site, in connection with the Services, and in communications with you. More specifically, we may use cookies as follows:

    • Authentication, Customization, Security and Other Functional Cookies. Cookies help us verify your Account and device and determine when you’re logged in, so we can make it easier for you to access the Site and Services and provide the appropriate experiences and features. We also use cookies to help prevent fraudulent use of login credentials and to remember choices you’ve made on the Site and Services, such as your language preference and saved content.
    • Performance and Analytics. Cookies help us analyze how the Site is being accessed and used and enable us to track access to and performance of the Services. For example, we use cookies to determine if you viewed a page or opened an email. This helps us provide you with information that you find interesting.
    • Third Party Cookies used with the Site and Services. Third party services connected with our Site and Services may use cookies to help you sign into their services from our Site or Services or use functions, applications, and other features they provide to you through our Site and Services. Any such third-party cookie usage is governed by the policy of the third party placing the cookie.
    • Advertisements. We partner with third party publishers, advertising networks, and service providers to manage our ads on other sites. Our third-party partners may set cookies on your device or browser to gather information about your activities on the Site or Services and other sites you visit, in order to provide you with our ads. For example, if you visit our Site and also use a social media platform, you may see our ad in your social media newsfeed or timeline.
